Theme: 7 years old - Lukas Graham
The beginning of Mallowstar’s reign was not as graceful or elegant as most. With Ashstar’s sudden decision to step down and his subsequent death after transferring his nine lives, the young she-cat deputy found herself somewhat forced into responsibilities she was not yet able to handle. Then again what leader was ever prepared to face the slow death of their Clan?
Mallowstar did as best as she was able to, seeing to it RiverClan’s fate was held above the fate of her neighbors. They managed through their first leafbare with little problem, the second brought with it disease and death, but yet they pulled through. However with each passing season RiverClan grew smaller and smaller, whether from death or abandonment. She bared no ill will towards any cat who wanted to leave and even went as far to make sure they left with full bellies.
To those who remained, she did her best to work alongside them as a fellow warrior rather than their leader. In time, Mallowstar even permanently moved her nest to the warrior’s den, situating it right beside her brother’s own. Despite their past quarrels the silvery she-cat more or less depended on his confidence to keep her going in the face of the unknown. She may have kept up a front to her Clan, there were no secrets between her and Newtblaze- not anymore. Though she had not, nor would ever name a deputy, she would have liked to believe her brother filled the spot in all but title.
Mallowstar would lose her first life to sickness and her second would be lost days later to starvation. While not reckless by nature, the she-cat made use of her extra lives and was almost always the first cat to face danger. Over the course of several moons she would lose a total of five lives due to this.
Several seasons later, RiverClan, led by an old and tired Mallowstar, was finally disbanded. Their population could never manage to get above single digits, and though some cats had settled down to raise kits, the children never seemed to stick around for very long. In a heartfelt goodbye the RiverClan leader relinquished her title and returned to her former name, Mallowbee.
Most cats chose to linger around the territories while others left in hopes of finding better homes. Mallowbee and Newtblaze made a new home elsewhere in the remains of their territory, where they would live out semi-peaceful lives. The worse they ever had to worry about was the occasional predator that lingered too closely.
Without hearing much of anything from the other clans, Mallowbee was left to assume they all shared similar fates or perhaps had grown even more reclusive. She had been tempted on more than one occasion to cross the borders and investigate, but decided against that course of action, fearful it would put her and her brother in a dangerous situation. With RiverClan territory practically free for the taking she didn’t want to give them an open invitation to steal away her perfect life.
But eventually all good things had to come to an end. Newtblaze would lose his life to a particularly brave young fox who saw it fit to challenge the former warrior to his catch. Off in another part of the territory, Mallowbee remained ignorant to her brother’s passing and would only discover the tragedy days later. Upon discovering the body and holding an impromptu vigil for him, the pale she-cat dragged the corpse to the old camp and buried him.
From there on out she’d reclaim her former den and spend the rest of her days there, too guilt ridden to move on from his death. And many days would she be forced to live out alone, the remaining lives she held prolonging her death. Even still, they would only grant so much extra time.
Soon after her fifteenth year Mallowbee would begin the arduous process of losing her last four lives to old age. Each ended at differing intervals, one only hours after the sixth was lost, another weeks later.
When she did finally pass on it was almost relieving to leave her body behind and float up toward the stars above. Mallowbee hadn’t realized how much she had missed her family until the very moment she laid eyes on them. Newtblaze, Larkheart, Linnetshade, Rippleshade.. The former RiverClan leader shamelessly broke into tears upon seeing them once again. However, as much as she was overjoyed with the family reunion, there was one figure missing. Dipperheart.
Despite her searches, Mallowbee could never seem to find the littermate that had left the Clans thinking he didn’t belong. Her heart broke anew at the thought of never seeing him again, but these emotions were soon shoved away. She had made him a promise before he’d left, and she fully intended on keeping it.
For an indiscernible amount of time Mallowbee stayed among the stars. There were clanmates and old friends she caught up with, time spent with a father she never knew, and reconciling the budding relationship between herself and Rippleshade before it was cut short by disaster. She made sure there were no loose ends because in time she’d knew she may never see any of these cats again.
With a goodbye to her close friends and family, Mallowbee eventually left StarClan itself to search among foreign skies for her lost brother. If fate saw it fit, she’d hope to return with him, but if not then.. at least she got to see them all again.
